Helen Mirren – bio

Helen Mirren was born Helen Lydia Mironoff of a Russian father and English mother in West London. The family changed their name to Mirren in the 1950’s. By age 18 she had been accepted into the National Youth Theatre and later moved on to the Royal Shakespeare Company.

As well as being a succesful theatre actress, Mirren has starred in both TV and films. Her most notable TV role being that of Jane Tennsion in Prime Suspect.

As a film actress Helen Mirren has starred in numerous movies including Calendar Girls, Gosforth Park and the Madness of King George.

As well as receiving an Oscar for her role in The Queen, she has received three other Oscar nominations:

Best Actress: The Station
Best Supporting Actress: The Madness of King George, Gosforth Park
